Pre-Literacy Teaching Certification
In order to obtain BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® Certification for 12 Professional Development hours please:
Complete the registration process on this site first. Once your registration is confirmed, you will be provided with a link to the Course Registration Form that will allow you to pay the $50 certification fee to the Stern Center for Language and Learning. To access the link later on, go to Account Settings (must be logged in to access this page.)
Click on Take Building Blocks and you will be taken to the Pre-Course Knowledge Inventory. Once you complete this, you will be allowed to begin the course. You will not be able to re-take this first Inventory which is used for research purposes.
Complete all course modules and activities. You will then take the Post-Course Knowledge Inventory. You must obtain a score of 80% or more in order to obtain the certificate for 12 hours of professional development. This inventory may be taken more than once.
Twelve professional development hours in Language Development and Literacy enhances your ability to build children’s emergent literacy skills and provide strong foundational skills for learning to read.
BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY ASSOCIATES QUALITY TO YOU AND YOUR PROGRAM ALIGNED WITH NATIONAL AND STATE STANDARDS
BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® is aligned with and references the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework (HSCOF) for Language Development and Literacy, including, Book Knowledge and Appreciation, Phonological Awareness, Print Awareness and Concepts, Early Writing, and Alphabet Knowledge.
The 12 hours also apply towards aspects of the following national organizations and/or credentials:
- Child Development Associate Credential (CDA # 2 & 8)
- National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
- National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC)
BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® certificate for 12 hours of Professional Learning may also be applied towards state program accreditations.
For example, it aligns to The VT Core Competencies for Early Childhood Professionals in the Northern Lights Level II Curriculum, as well as the VT Early Learning Standards.
BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® is recognized in the VT Northern Lights Career Development Center for early childhood and after school professionals as approved training hours.
It meets the arenas for Vermont STARS (STep Ahead Recognition System)
At this time the VT Child Development Division only accepts live training hours for child development license renewal. These hours may be used towards the VT Professional Educator’s license renewal.
This course meets other individual state early learning standards as children prepare to enter kindergarten and meet the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. Please check your state’s professional development system as to creditable online hours for license renewal and state credentials.
IDAHO, a partner in BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY®
The Lee Pesky Learning Center, in Boise, Idaho, is implementing BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® as part of their Idaho Early Literacy Project. Participants may take the course for continuing education credits or Idaho STARS training hours.
