Building Blocks Strategies to Serve Preschoolers at Burlington’s VNA Family Room

People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, has awarded a $6,000 grant to the Stern Center to train the early childhood development staff of Burlington, Vermont’s Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Family Room in BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® strategies.

The VNA Family Room provides free services to parents and their children from birth through five years including preschool, play groups, and parent education and support programs. The Family Room’s goal is to promote healthy social and emotional development in young children and enhance school readiness. The Stern Center’s BUILDING BLOCKS program provides early education providers and parents of high-risk children with research-proven strategies for building pre-literacy skills in preschoolers.

“The VNA Family Room is excited to partner with the Stern Center to provide literacy training to [its] staff and families…BUILDING BLOCKS will… provide not only concrete instruction, but also hands-on participation with families to help encourage home-based support for literacy development that is fun for the whole family. Through books, rhyme, and song, our children will develop new skills and confidence that will follow them into their kindergarten experience,” stated Samantha Stevens, Co-coordinator, VNA Family Room.

“The Stern Center is grateful for this grant from People’s United Community Foundation. It allows for the bringing together of two wonderful community resources, the Stern Center’s BUILDING BLOCKS program and the VNA Family Room, to further nurture the healthy development of children and families,” noted Sandy Rendall, Stern Center BUILDING BLOCKS Project Manager and Communications Director.
